Alitalia was the national airline of Italy and historically one of the most prominent carriers in the country. It operated domestic and international flights connecting Italy to various destinations worldwide. However, as of my last knowledge update in January 2022, Alitalia faced significant financial struggles and had undergone multiple restructurings and changes in ownership over the years due to financial difficulties.
It entered bankruptcy proceedings in 2017 and operated under extraordinary administration, seeking a solution to its financial woes. Efforts were made to find investors or buyers to rescue the airline. In 2021, a new state-owned company named ITA Airways (Italia Trasporto Aereo) was established to replace Alitalia.
