Dolwyddelan Castle was built in the early 13th century by Llywelyn Fawr, Tywysog Gwynedd a Cymru (Llywelyn the Great, Prince of Gwynedd and Wales). It initially comprised of just the one tower with two floors. Following the defeat of Llywelyn's grandsons, Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, in 1282 then Dafydd ap Gruffydd in 1283, the castle was surrendered to Edward I. Edward added the second tower. Later, in the 15th century, a third story was added to the main keep by lord Maredudd ap Ieuan. The battlements were added during a restoration and partial remodelling in the 19th century by Lord Willougby de Eresby. The castle is now in the care of Cadw, the Welsh government's department for the protection and preservation of historic buildings.
